Talks and a temporary exhibition 1st June - 19th September 2024

‘Ashore We Stumbled– The Royal Warwickshire Regiment and D-Day’

1st June - 19th September

To mark the role played by the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in the D-Day Landings in Normandy 6th June 1944, 80 years ago, we have a new exhibition in Fusilier Museum presenting objects and stories surrounding this key historic event. These reveal poignant and powerful stories of bravery, tragedy, and humanity experienced by soldiers of Birmingham, Coventry, and Warwickshire against the backdrop of the key turning point of the Second World War.

This exhibition presents stories of the soldiers of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment on D-Day illustrated through special artefacts, documents and photos from the operation including the German adversaries. The exhibition explores the movements of the Warwicks in their landing and advance across Normandy illustrated through dioramas, photographs and eye witness accounts. Visitors will be able to see a steel helmet worn by one of the soldiers on the day with visible damage from sniper or mortar fire. The initial advance into Normandy is explored including the great battle for Lebisey, outside Caan where many Warwicks lost their lives. Artefacts, photographs, and personal and official documents of the events create a picture for visitors of the dramatic highs and lows of the Normandy campaign. It also explores how D-Day has been remembered subsequently through medals, special medallions and memorial events. Together, these tell the dramatic events of D-Day and the Normandy campaign from the perspective of both commanders and ordinary soldiers which ultimately led to the liberation of Europe.
