Souvenirs
The museum collection includes a variety of embroidered items which were sent or brought home by soldiers as souvenirs.
Private Albert Randall
Albert lived in 5 Popular Terrace, Hyde Park Rd, Smethwick. He joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment on 12th December 1915 at 25 years old. In the July 1916, Albert was admitted into the Southern General Hospital, Bristol with a war injury - a bullet had passed through his right ear causing a varicose aneurysm of the right temporal artery. He was there from 22nd July 1916 until 11th September 1916. He last saw his sweetheart Lily in November 1916 having presented her with this beautiful, embroidered souvenir from France (below). He died on the Western Front one year later. The 2/7th Battalion War Diary is very precise on where Albert died. The trench raid in the Greenland Hill sector outside Arras took place at 2am on 19th November 1917. The troops involved left British trenches at 12.15am and were in assembly positions in front of the German barbed wire by 1.20am. They were in different groups and Albert was in the Right Party. There were also Left and Support parties. The Right Party moved forward at 2am but had been ‘scattered by shell fire’ implying men had taken cover and become separated. The shell fire may have been British fire falling short. Only six men were left in the party that got through the wire, two of whom were then wounded, and one killed. We know this was Albert as he was the only man in the battalion who died that day.
