Online Exhibitions - a new venture

Welcome to our new initiative to publish online versions of previous temporary exhibitions so that they can be used for research or general interest. When a cultural organisation makes that fateful decision to create an exhibition based upon a particular idea, they commit themselves to a substantial amount of work in terms of research, object selection and conservation, interpretation and design. For a small museum like ours, this is only possible with the help a team of highly motivated volunteers who commit themselves to the different tasks. Although the end result is hopefully enjoyed by many visitors, when the temporary exhibition comes down it feels like all the hard work done has been reduced to random piles of notes and images with objects hidden away back in store. Therefore, our intention from now is to select exhibitions which with a little modification can have a much longer existence in the digital universe. Here, they can act as resources for learning and inspiration with a public invitation for people to contribute any relevant new information. We hope the growing body of online exhibitions will become a valued resource and focal point for new information and ideas which can benefit our understanding of the museum collections.

By a Thread

This virtual exhibition builds on the temporary exhibition 'By a Thread' held at the museum in Spring 2024 which revealed a wide variety of textiles in the museum's collection. As we have studied the embroideries in more depth, and considered the contexts in which they were made, many questions have arisen which we are currently researching. You will see that the words 'possibly', 'perhaps', 'may' and 'unknown' appear regularly in the text that follows. By putting this exhibition online we hope visitors who view it might be able to help in this research, so if you have any ideas or questions relating to the pieces on show, please get in touch with us.
